Man Jailed For Attempting To Sell Baby

The Federal High Court sitting in Calabar yesterday sentenced 31-year-old Ifeanyi Kelvin Okorogu to three years in prison for attempting to sell a three-day-old baby. Okorogu was arrested in December by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). The charge sheet signed by Unimwen Aigbeze, of NAPTIP accused Okorogu of trying to sell the baby of a 16-year-old girl to Angela Tokees Nwaelechi, on December 1. The offence is punishable under Section 29 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015. Justice Inyang Ekwo sentenced Okorogu to two years on the first count and one year on the second. He said both sentences would run concurrently. Okorogu’s lawyer Cosmos Obinna urged the court to temper justice with mercy. He said the accused was a first-time offender, with no criminal record. Markus Braun, the former CEO of Wirecard, has been arrested in Germany after $2.1 billion went missing at the digital payments company. Munich prosecutors confirmed Tuesday that Braun was arrested on suspicion of possibly having inflated Wirecard's balance sheet and sales through fake transactions with third parties in order to make the company more attractive to investors and customers. Wirecard acknowledged on Monday that €1.9 billion ($2.1 billion) in missing cash, which made up roughly a quarter of its assets, probably never existed in the first place. University Professor Arrested Over Grace Mugabe's 'Fake' PhD

Zimbabwean anti-corruption investigators said Friday they had arrested a university professor over the suspected fraudulent awarding of a doctorate to former first lady Grace Mugabe. Levi Nyagura, the vice chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe, was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission following an investigation into the PhD. It emerged that Grace was awarded the degree by the university in 2014 after just months of study. Doctorates typically require several years of full-time research and writing. "Nyagura has been arrested. We cannot have people who award fake degrees," Goodson Nguni, a ZACC commissioner told AFP over the telephone. The professor will be charged with abuse of office, he said, refusing to say whether Grace also faces arrest.
