These harrowing pictures show the inside of a "disgusting" home where a neglected great-grandmother died while being eaten by maggots.

Catherine Purcell Snr died in a “cesspit of her own faeces and bodily fluid”, which chemically destroyed her mattress and bed, a court heard.

Prosecutors said this reaction burned the skeletal victim’s skin before her infected body was fed on by maggots at the house in Kirkby, Merseyside.

The disabled 68-year-old, who weighed just five and a half stone, also had undiagnosed cancer of the tongue, which would have made swallowing painful.

This afternoon, her husband John Purcell, 71, and daughter Catherine Purcell Jr, 35, were spared jail for neglecting her, the Liverpool Echo reported.

The pair had denied and been cleared in May of Catherine Snr's manslaughter.

However, they were found guilty of neglecting the vulnerable pensioner, whose body was found by paramedics at the home in July 2016.
Shocking pictures from inside the property, released by police today, appear to show the bed where Catherine Snr spent her final moments.

A filthy double bed can be seen in a grubby bedroom, with a pile of rubbish on the floor. Cigarette butts are pictured scattered across the mattress.

Today's sentence was welcomed by Merseyside Police.

Detective Inspector Kevin Plunkett said the case was one of the worst he has ever worked on, and he hopes the sentences mean Catherine Snr's family are able to move on.

He said: "This was a truly horrible case and the house where Mrs Purcell died was one of the worst I, and other experienced officers, had ever seen.

"The conditions Mrs Purcell were left in were disgusting and her estranged husband and daughter failed to seek the medical attention that she so clearly needed.

"We also believe that when Mrs Purcell died her body was moved to a smaller, cleaner bedroom, when in fact she died in a larger double bedroom where evidence of flies and maggots were found.

"The situation was made worse by the fact that both Mrs Purcell’s daughter, who was her official carer, and her estranged husband, who assisted with her daily care, continued to deny responsibility, even after her death, and the case had to go to trial.

"I hope this result now means the rest of Mrs Purcell’s family are able to move on with their lives."

Purcell and Catherine Jr were handed suspended sentences at Liverpool Crown Court, where the prosecutor said the neglect had lasted around six months.

David McLachlan QC, prosecuting, argued during the trial that the pair knew Catherine Snr was dying, but failed to seek medical aid, which three weeks beforehand would have saved her life.

A post-mortem examination found the pensioner died from pneumonia, dehydration and skin ulcers, including a hip ulcer penetrating to the bone.
